The price of freedom is eternal vigilance

Be prepared for the offline world

I read an interesting article in today’s PostMagazine, Technology section (Sunday 12 April 2009 edition of the South China Morning Post, a.k.a. Sunday Morning Post). Bien Perez is the main contributor to this section, but this particular article – entitled “Gone, but nor forgotten”, was written by Peter Svensson and illustrated by Steve Yau.

In short, the point is that when you “log off” for the final time (either that you pass away, or become severely disabled, or leave for a “no return” expedition to the planet of the Apes etc.), you can – using one of various new web services – leave relevant information to your dear ones for them to know what to do with your cyberlife and cyberposessions (such as your flickr photo collection or your blog) once your are gone.

Three sites were described in the above mentioned article, namely:

- Death Switch;

- Slightly Morbid;

and

- Legacy Locker.

Check them out before your check out. As the saying goes 1) “shit happens” and 2) today might thus be your last day – sorry – that’s life, and the end of it ;)

Facebook caves in

Facebook Terms of Service (aka “TOS”) update:

A couple of weeks ago, we posted an update to our Terms of Use that we hoped would clarify some parts of it for our users. Over the past couple of days, we have received a lot of questions and comments about these updated terms and what they mean for people and their information. Because of the feedback we received, we have decided to return to our previous Terms of Use while we resolve the issues that people have raised. For more information, visit the Facebook Blog.
